Bodegas Hercal: Biodynamic Authenticity in the Heart of Ribera del Duero
In Roa, the geographical and symbolic center of Ribera del Duero, Bodegas Hercal combines heritage with a modern mindset. Founded by the Casado brothers, the winery reflects decades of dedication to viticulture and a clear vision to craft Tempranillo wines with authenticity and depth, guided by biodynamic and artisanal methods.
Tradition Reimagined
The Casado family cultivated vineyards for generations, supplying grapes to larger producers. In 2005, the brothers made a decisive change. They began bottling their own wine and speaking directly through their land. Since that moment, Hercal has blended traditional values with meticulous winemaking and gained recognition from both national and international markets.
Care at Every Step
With 20 hectares in Roa, Anguíx and Fuentecén, the estate manages each vineyard with precise attention. The team harvests all grapes by hand, using small 15-kilogram crates to protect the fruit. In the cellar, they work with natural fermentation and apply minimal sulphites. French and American oak barrels support the aging process, while careful bâtonnage builds texture and balance.
Biodynamic Practice with an Approachable Spirit
Hercal embraces biodynamic viticulture as a philosophy rather than a marketing claim. By working with nature’s rhythms, the team preserves living soils and protects long-term ecological balance. Yet the wines remain approachable. They show the structure and depth typical of Ribera del Duero while also offering the clarity and expressiveness that make Tempranillo so versatile.
A Living Message of Place
Each bottle from Bodegas Hercal carries a message of its origin. Tempranillo acts as a translator for clay soils, altitude and seasonal contrast. By uniting biodynamic farming with precise craftsmanship, the winery creates wines that express intention, place and honesty without compromise.
