Maria Ganxa
María Ganxa is more than a wine; it is a mythical figure from the popular imagination of Falset. In local tales passed down through generations, the witch María Ganxa lived in wells or ponds, emerging to take away misbehaving children. This dark legend has been reimagined here as a symbol of freedom, freshness, and authenticity.
The name is no accident. “Ganxa” comes from the Catalan enganxar, meaning “to catch,” and that is exactly what this wine does. Once you taste it, it captures you. Not only because of its vibrant character and aromatic expression, but also because of the honesty with which it is made.
Cariñena is a grape known for its power and firm tannins, often requiring time in barrel or bottle to soften. Celler Pascona takes a different approach with María Ganxa, showing the variety in its freshest, most direct form. The result is a young red that feels like a breath of clean air in a warm-climate appellation. Its pronounced acidity, floral and fruity profile, and fluid texture place it surprisingly close to what could be considered a cool-climate wine.
The most remarkable aspect is that this freshness does not come from young vines, but from old goblet-trained vineyards over six decades old. These mature vines have deep roots that translate the territory with complexity and authenticity, yet they still deliver a wine full of lightness and energy.
The label says it clearly: a female figure without clothes, without adornment, without makeup. It represents the wine exactly as it is. No oak, no disguises, just Cariñena in its purest, freshest, and most liberated form. María Ganxa is perfect for those seeking reds with energy and transparency, pairing beautifully with rice dishes, charcuterie, grilled meats, or simply as a wine to enjoy when you want nothing hidden. Like its name, it leaves a lasting impression.
