La Mare

La Mare, meaning “the mother” in Catalan, is a heartfelt homage to origin, care, and the quiet strength that sustains life in the vineyard. In Montsant, Garnacha is not just a grape but a piece of cultural heritage, and in the hands of Celler Pascona it becomes a voice for the land. The old vines used for La Mare grow in poor granitic soils that challenge the plants, forcing them to dig deep for nutrients. This struggle results in fewer clusters, each packed with character and concentration.
The estate enjoys a climate that marries warm Mediterranean days with cool nights, preserving acidity while allowing the fruit to ripen fully. This natural rhythm gives La Mare a dual personality: robust and full of depth, yet elegant and fresh. In the winery, each decision is made to protect this balance. Fermentation in stainless steel keeps the fruit vivid and expressive, while a year of rest in French oak brings subtle layers of spice, cocoa, and soft creaminess that frame the wine without overshadowing it.
Production is extremely limited, with only 1,200 to 1,500 bottles made each year. This rarity adds to the wine’s allure, making each bottle a small treasure from Montsant’s Garnacha heartland. La Mare is a versatile partner for a wide range of dishes, from slow-cooked game to grilled lamb or aged Manchego. It is also a wine that can be enjoyed on its own, inviting quiet moments of reflection. In every sip, it tells a story of deep roots, old vines, and a family’s connection to their land.

PRODUCTION METHOD
La Mare is crafted exclusively from old-vine Garnacha planted on the Pascona estate’s granitic slopes. These vines, among the oldest in the property, yield naturally small harvests, concentrating aromas, flavors, and texture in every grape. Harvest is done entirely by hand to ensure only the best fruit is selected. The grapes are gently destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to capture the essence of the variety. Each parcel is vinified separately before blending, allowing the full personality of the Garnacha to emerge in perfect harmony.
AGING
Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, which add subtle spice, depth, and a rounded texture while maintaining the wine’s natural freshness.
TASTING NOTE
La Mare displays a deep picota cherry color with bright purple edges. On the nose, ripe blackberries and plums mingle with delicate vanilla and soft toasted notes. The palate is generous, with velvety tannins and a core of rich fruit lifted by a fresh, vibrant finish.
