Mar de Batea Negre

Mar de Batea Negre is a red wine that unites the distinctive character of Garnacha Peluda with the innovation of undersea aging. This lesser-known Garnacha variety is recognisable by the fine hair on the underside of its leaves, a natural adaptation to the warm, dry climate of Terra Alta. Besides protecting the vine, this trait translates into wines with fresher acidity, softer tannins, and an aromatic profile full of energy.

The grapes come from old vines rooted in “panal” soils, a fossilised sandy formation typical of the region. Grown in a Mediterranean climate with continental influence, these vines deliver a balanced, vibrant, and authentic expression of their environment.

Winemaking begins with semi-carbonic maceration in stainless steel tanks, using whole grape clusters. The natural weight of the upper grapes gently crushes those below, releasing juice that begins fermenting spontaneously with the grape’s native yeasts. At the same time, intact berries undergo internal fermentation, intensifying fruit character and softening structure. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in stainless steel, preserving the variety’s freshness and clarity.

Once this stage is complete, the wine is transferred to 2,500-litre French oak foudres, where it matures for eight months. Large-format oak provides gentle oxygenation, balance, silky texture, and a subtle spicy background. The journey ends with six months of underwater aging near the Ebre Delta at a depth of twenty metres. Here, constant pressure and temperature allow for a slow, harmonious refinement.

The result is a wine with a true Mediterranean soul, showing aromas of ripe red fruit, wildflowers, and delicate spice. On the palate, it is broad and silky, with lively acidity and a fresh, persistent finish. Mar de Batea Negre is original, balanced, and full of purpose, born between land and sea to offer a unique experience.

PRODUCTION METHOD
Mar de Batea Negre is made from 100% Garnacha Peluda, sourced from carefully managed vineyards in Terra Alta. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to balance fresh fruit expression with depth. Whole grape clusters are placed in a 2,500-litre French oak foudre for semi-carbonic maceration. This process gently extracts colour and aroma while preserving vibrant fruit character. Fermentation begins naturally with indigenous yeasts. After initial fermentation, the wine ages for six to eight months in the same foudre, allowing gentle micro-oxygenation and development of texture. Finally, the wine undergoes a unique maturation stage, spending six months submerged at a depth of 20 metres in the Mediterranean Sea, near the Ebre Delta.
AGING
Aged for six to eight months in French oak foudre, followed by six months at 20 metres below the Mediterranean Sea, adding refinement and maritime influence.
TASTING NOTE
Medium ruby with bright edges. The nose reveals ripe red fruits, subtle spice, and a faint saline hint. On the palate, it is smooth and well-structured, with juicy cherry and raspberry flavours supported by gentle tannins. The finish is long and elegant, with a touch of minerality from its undersea aging.
