Vila-Closa Garnacha Peluda
Vila-Closa Garnacha Peluda pays tribute to one of Terra Alta’s hidden treasures, a rare and distinctive grape variety known as Garnacha Peluda. Its name comes from the fine hair on the underside of its leaves, a natural adaptation that helps the vine retain moisture in hot, dry climates. This feature not only makes the plant visually unique, it also influences the wine’s profile, giving it fresher acidity and softer tannins compared to other Garnacha types.
The grapes for this wine come from old vines rooted in Terra Alta’s calcareous “panal” soils. This combination of a unique terroir and a Mediterranean climate with continental nuances brings natural complexity and refined balance.
The winemaking process follows a minimalist and environmentally respectful approach. Semi-carbonic maceration takes place in stainless steel tanks with whole clusters. The natural weight of the grapes gently crushes the ones below, releasing the first juice, which begins fermenting spontaneously with native yeasts. Inside each intact grape, a natural internal fermentation also occurs, as if each berry were its own tiny fermentation vessel. This process intensifies the fruit profile and smooths the wine’s structure.
After alcoholic fermentation, the wine also undergoes malolactic fermentation in stainless steel, preserving freshness and varietal character. It then moves to large French oak foudres, where it matures for several months. This slow aging allows subtle micro-oxygenation, adding depth, softness, and an elegant integration of aromas.
The result is a vibrant red with aromas of ripe red fruits, wildflowers, and delicate spice. On the palate, it is enveloping and velvety, with lively acidity and a long, elegant finish.
With limited production, Vila-Closa Garnacha Peluda is more than just a wine. It is an invitation to rediscover the richness of native varieties and to savour the authenticity of one of the Mediterranean’s purest corners.
